Pune, November 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro’s Pink Line and laid foundation stones for expansion projects on Tuesday, marking a combined infrastructure investment of approximately ₹21,800 crore.
Modi joined the programme through video conferencing. The projects include the completed Line 3 corridor, costing over ₹8,300 crore, and four proposed Phase-II corridors estimated at around ₹13,500 crore.
The approximately 23-kilometre Pink Line links Maan with District Court station, connecting the Hinjewadi information technology hub to Shivajinagar. Passenger services are scheduled to begin on November 4, according to Akashvani News.
The route offers another travel option for employees working in Hinjewadi and residents travelling between western Pune and central areas. Connections with the existing Metro network are intended to make journeys across the city easier.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, women train operators will operate the Pink Line. The project also envisages meeting approximately 30 per cent of its electricity requirements through solar power.
The next expansion comprises Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A. These corridors will extend services towards Chandani Chowk and Vitthalwadi, connect Kharadi with Khadakwasla, and link Nal Stop with Manik Baug.
Planned interchange facilities will connect the new routes with existing Metro services and intercity buses. The expansion aims to serve residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and employment centres.
Addressing the programme, Modi highlighted the role of urban transport in supporting economic activity and improving everyday mobility.
While the Pink Line has reached inauguration, the Phase-II corridors remain development projects whose passenger benefits will follow construction and commissioning.
