Auckland November 4: India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the rain-affected first One Day International at Eden Park, with Virat Kohli leading the chase after a strong performance from the bowling attack.
New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs. India’s pacers kept the hosts under pressure with regular wickets, preventing them from building substantial partnerships. Arshdeep Singh finished with four wickets, helping restrict New Zealand to a manageable total.
Rain repeatedly interrupted India’s reply, forcing adjustments to the target and available overs. The visitors were eventually set 143 runs from 32 overs under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method.
Kohli anchored the chase with 74 off 51 deliveries, providing momentum and stability despite the interruptions. India reached 143 for five in 22.4 overs to complete the victory with time to spare.
New Zealand picked up wickets during the pursuit, but their modest total left limited room for error. Kohli’s contribution proved decisive in keeping India ahead.
The result gives India a 1–0 advantage in the five-match series and an encouraging start to their ODI campaign in New Zealand.
